Advantages of Brushless DC Motor VS Brushed Motor !

What is Brushless DC Motor?

Brushless dc motor uses electronic controller to switch DC currents to the motor widings producing magnetic fields which effectively rotate in space and which the permanent magnet rotor follows. The controller adjusts the phase and amplitude of the DC current pulses to control the speed and torque of the motor. This control system is an alternative to the mechanical commutator (brushes) used in many conventional electric motors.

What is Brushed DC Motor?

Brushed DC motor is an internally commutated electric motor designed to be run from a direct current power source and utilizing an electric brush for contact.

Brushed dc motor can change speed by change operate voltage or strength of magnetic field. Depending on the connections of the field to the power supply, the speed and torque characteristics of a brushed motor can be althered to provide steady speed and or speed inversely proportional to the mechanical load.

But because friction has effects on motor carbon brushes, they will wear with time goes by, therefore, brushed motor requires some sort of maintainance by brush cleaning or replacement, which would increased cost of maintainance and time.

Also brushed motor has lower speed, although it has high startup torque, but it's unable to maintain high-level speed, this is because it will easily geats heat if running at high speed continously.

So more and more electronic applications start to replace brushed motor with brushless motor.

Advantages of Brushless DC Motor:

1. High Efficiency:

Brushless motors can work continuously at maximum rotational force (torque).

2. Controllability.

BLDC motors can be controlled by feedback mechanisms, to provide precise desired torque and rotation speed. Precision control in turn reduces energy consumption and heat generation, and—in cases where motors are battery powered—lengthens the battery life.

3. High durability and low electric noise generation

For brushed motor, the brushes and commutator wear down as a result of continuous moving contact, and also produce sparks where contact is made. Electrical noise, in particular, is the result of the strong sparks that tend to occur at the areas where the brushes pass over the gaps in the commutator. This is why BLDC motors are often considered preferable in applications where it is important to avoid electrical noise.

In conclusion, compare to brushed motor, brushless motor produce low noise, faster speed, high power, high efficiency and low maintainance cost.

Brushless motor also has wide range of application, electric skateboard, electric surfboard, electric bike, electric scooter, electric car, motorcycle, AGV, rc car, rc boat, rc airplane, multicopter, medical devices, computer peripherals (disk drives, printers), hand-held power tools, model aircraft to automobiles, washing machines, swimming pool tranning machine, industrail devices, etc.,
